What to do if your card is declined at checkout

If you're trying to book a stay and your card isn't going through, here's how to fix it.

Common reasons your card is declined

  • Insufficient funds. Even if your account balance looks right, holds and pending charges from other purchases can affect what's available.

  • A bank security check. Many banks block first-time charges to a new merchant. Your bank may have sent you a verification code or asked you to confirm the transaction.

  • Card or cardholder verification. Some banks decline transactions from a card used for someone other than the cardholder, or transactions that don't match the cardholder's typical activity.

  • Expired or replaced card. Even if you have the card in front of you, the bank may have flagged it for replacement.

What to try

  1. Check with your bank first. Call the number on the back of your card. They can usually tell you exactly why the charge is being blocked.

  2. Approve any verification codes. If your bank texted or emailed you a code, that's a normal security step. Confirming with your bank should clear the way for the charge to go through.

  3. Try a different payment method. Whimstay accepts several payment methods, and you'll see your options at checkout.

  4. Wait a few minutes between attempts. Repeated failed attempts in quick succession can trigger additional fraud blocks at your bank.

If your card was charged but the booking didn't go through

Most often, what you're seeing is a temporary authorization that drops off your statement within a few business days without becoming an actual charge. Contact your bank for information on temporary authorizations or charges you might not recognize.
